He said: “Can you imagine if you had to explain to your young children that they weren’t going away on holiday this year? You really have to be in extreme financial difficulties to contemplate that. That’s how important holidays have become.”

But young families should still remember to take out the correct travel insurance policies as it may cost you a small fortune if anything happens whilst on holiday.

Torquay Police Cracking down on Street Urinators

Rowdy revellers in Torquay, Devon will be forced to scrub down shop doorways and alleyways or face arrest.

Superintendent Chris Singer, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “It is a serious message to be responsible for your actions.

“Some people may think it’s a bit of fun to relieve themselves in the street after a night on the town but it’s not.

“For the majority who have to live, work and shop in the area it’s not nice after these offenders have left their mess behind.”

Torquay has a population of 65,000 which swells dramatically with the summer influx of tourists.

The mops will be provided by Torbay Council but opponents claim they could be used as weapons by drunken revellers.

Tourism worker Darren Kent, 24, said: “It may seem like a good idea but I can see it being a total nightmare.

“It only takes one idiot to use the stick part of it to lash out and a policeman or member of the public could be seriously injured.”

Resident Charlotte Young, 22, said: “It’s a really bad idea. Some people get really aggressive when they have had a few drinks.

“Lecturing them and handing out sticks will just make things worse.”

As Credit Crunch Beckons 167 New Homes to Be Built

A £25 million housing development in South Birmingham started on site today, despite the current economic climate.  The number of homes being built in Britain has slipped to its lowest level since 1945 and plummeting construction activity is expected to lose the industry as much as 100,000 jobs.

Despite the doom and gloom, Bournville Village Trust is to build 167 new social renting and owner occupied homes on the Lower Shenley estate.

Roger Cadbury, Chairman of the Trust turned the first turf to mark the commencement of the two year contract.

All homes will be constructed to the newly introduced Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 environmental standard and recycled bricks will be crushed and used for hardcore.  Quality and the environment have been key considerations in the design of the dwellings which will have low energy consumption.  The properties will be highly insulated and will incorporate solar hot water systems. Materials have been sourced to meet the ‘A’ rating under the BRE’s Green Guide to Construction and water usage has been reduced by providing water butts, low flush toilets and reduced capacity baths.  To reduce maintenance costs, composite aluminium has been used for windows.

Other innovative techniques will include a pioneering ‘Home Zone’ street design where people and cars share the same carriageway and pavements. Home Zones were first introduced to the Netherlands to champion safer communities by encouraging cars in residential areas to travel at less than 10mph; only slightly faster than typical walking pace.

In order to persuade residents to spend more time at the front of their homes, the Home Zone scheme aims to introduce larger areas for children to play in as well as generously proportioned gardens, typical of BVT developments, and new locations for residents to meet; all with the intention of building safer communities.

Bournville Village Trust’s multi million pound development which has received a grant from the Housing Corporation will be project managed by Turner and Townsend and built by the contractor, Kier Partnership Homes.  Bigwood Chartered Surveyors and Robert Powell & Co., will handle the sale of 34 private homes on Parklands, off Shenley Lane which will range from two-bedroom flats to five-bedroom family houses.

Hitesh Champaneri at Bournville Village Trust said: “The proposals are a comprehensive approach to redevelopment and include safety features and high quality design that relate well to its context.”

Lorraine Boothroyd, Project Manager with Turner & Townsend says: “All aspects of community and shopping facilities at Shenley have already been upgraded including the extension of the car park, paving and lighting renewal to enhance the Bournville community as not only an exemplar of sustainable living but also as a place where families enjoy spending their time.  Certainly Turner & Townsend is proud to be involved in such an innovative scheme in the Midlands.”

Phase One of the major redevelopment is already complete and includes fifty six new bungalows, flats and homes as well as unprecedented levels of landscaping, some public artwork and unique security lighting.

Quick Win Solution for Your Laundry

It’s the same story, just a different day: washing, folding and putting away laundry. Here are some creative solutions to get you through the mundane, everyday task of organizing laundry and laundry rooms.

Mesh bags: Use mesh bags with zippers to hold small items, such as socks and undergarments. Label each bag with the name of the person in the family. This method works especially well for those who have large families. It minimizes the time to find matches for socks and keeps each family member’s small laundry items together.

Laundry baskets: Place a laundry basket for each member of the family in the area that they get dressed. This is normally a bedroom or bathroom. Also, put another basket or set of baskets in the laundry room for clean, folded clothes. Especially for those with small children, it is helpful to have the baskets labeled with their names. To organized the baskets in the laundry room, use vertical shelving to maximize space. Avoid using unlined wicker baskets because they tend to snag the clothing. Using a system such as this makes the sorting process easier.

Hooks: If your laundry room has a lot of wall space and is near the entrance of your home, consider adding hooks. Hooks works well for hanging lightweight coats, umbrellas, backpacks and purses. If you have several children, assign hooks with their names.

Building/remodeling a laundry room: If you are building or remodeling, consider placing a laundry room near your bedrooms. For example, if you have all your bedrooms upstairs, look for ways to have the laundry room on that level. A client of mine has built in drawers in her laundry room that slide in and out. She puts her lights in one, darks in one and delicates in another. This way she avoids laundry baskets in her laundry room all together. If your space is limited, consider having a wall-mounted, fold-down ironing table. Or place a hook over your laundry room door to put your ironing board on.

Vandals are Ruining the Traditional Cottages

VANDALS are destroying what is left of the three historical cottages that form part of the Red Location Museum in New Brighton.

The cottages, opposite the museum, are slowly disappearing, sparking concern from members of the public, who fear that they will lose their significance.

Debbie Pretorius, who drives past the dilapidated structures from time to time, said she was concerned about the heritage of those cottages: “It‘s terrible. There is less and less of those buildings left.”

She said the structures had huge historical significance, but no one seemed to be taking care of them. “The museum owes its existence to those buildings. It‘s worrying to notice that they are disappearing.”

New Brighton resident Keke Pemba said vandals were stealing material from the cottages and selling it to scrapyards.

“People are destroying and vandalising those houses, including my family home, which is being stripped.”

Pemba said the cottages used to be single men‘s quarters and housed migrant workers who came from as far as Lesotho. Most of them worked in Deal Party. “Each house had four rooms and in each of those, 10 people slept.”

Nelson Mandela Bay recreation and cultural services committee chairman Mike Kwenaite said the municipality was aware of the vandalism. “The safety and security department promised to beef up security there.”

Kwenaite said the municipality wanted to preserve the cottages as they were.

“We don‘t want to renovate them and we don‘t want to rebuild them. We want to build around them,” he said.
