It’s the same story, just a different day: washing, folding and putting away laundry. Here are some creative solutions to get you through the mundane, everyday task of organizing laundry and laundry rooms.
Mesh bags: Use mesh bags with zippers to hold small items, such as socks and undergarments. Label each bag with the name of the person in the family. This method works especially well for those who have large families. It minimizes the time to find matches for socks and keeps each family member’s small laundry items together.
Laundry baskets: Place a laundry basket for each member of the family in the area that they get dressed. This is normally a bedroom or bathroom. Also, put another basket or set of baskets in the laundry room for clean, folded clothes. Especially for those with small children, it is helpful to have the baskets labeled with their names. To organized the baskets in the laundry room, use vertical shelving to maximize space. Avoid using unlined wicker baskets because they tend to snag the clothing. Using a system such as this makes the sorting process easier.
Hooks: If your laundry room has a lot of wall space and is near the entrance of your home, consider adding hooks. Hooks works well for hanging lightweight coats, umbrellas, backpacks and purses. If you have several children, assign hooks with their names.
Building/remodeling a laundry room: If you are building or remodeling, consider placing a laundry room near your bedrooms. For example, if you have all your bedrooms upstairs, look for ways to have the laundry room on that level. A client of mine has built in drawers in her laundry room that slide in and out. She puts her lights in one, darks in one and delicates in another. This way she avoids laundry baskets in her laundry room all together. If your space is limited, consider having a wall-mounted, fold-down ironing table. Or place a hook over your laundry room door to put your ironing board on.
